The two major themes that I see in the Harry Potter series are coming of age and quest. Throughout the series the reader gets to see Harry grow up, some readers actually grow up with Harry and his friends; Ron and Hermonie. The series is coming of age in the way that we see Harry grow up and find his place in the world. As the story progresses we see Harry battle with good and evil. The further we get in the story we can see how Harry grows not just in age, but in the moral choices that he makes. When we first meet Harry he is a little boy who doesn’t know about his past, he doesn’t know where comes from. As the series progresses we see Harry go from a little lost boy to a young man who has figured out how important he really is. Muggle world Harry was raised to believing that he is a nobody that he came from good for nothing parents. On Harry’s eleventh birthday he finds out that he is a wizard. In the Wizarding world Harry is known as the boy who lived, he is a hero to the people in that world. Although Harry is not use to people knowing him or having people see him as a hero he comes to accept the fact that that is who he is. He is not a nobody he is a hero to many people and we see that in him as the series goes on.
The series is also a quest. Harry’s quest begins when he first survives Voldemort’s first attempt on his life. Harry faces many quest through his years at Hogwarts. In The Sorcerer’s Stone some of Harry’s quest are living with the Dursleys, discovering that he is a wizard, being known as the Boy Who Lived, figuring out what is being guarded at Hogwarts and protecting the Sorcerer’s Stone. In protecting the stone Harry faces the quest of Devil’s snare, finding the right key, surviving the chess game, solving the riddle, and guarding the stone against professor quarial and Voldemort. At the end of the book Harry has succeeded in doing just that. In A Chamber of Secrets Harry’s quest is finding the Chamber of Secrets and saving Ginny and beating Voldemort once again. As the series progresses I cant wait to see what other quest Harry goes through.
